HARDBALL

When a government is dependent upon bankers for money, they and not the leaders of the government control the situation, since the hand that gives is above the hand that takes. Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain.

God is A Person – Reflections of Two Nobel Laureates, Charles H . Townes & William D. Phillips

(FF: When my daughter came back from her Odissi dance tour in India, she gave me this book for my 60th birthday. What a thoughtful gift! The majority of the public have a warped sense that scientists are generally anti-religion. It is heartening to read that two Nobel Laureates have put to rest this ridiculous notion. Charles Townes is the inventor of maser and laser and in 2005 won the Templeton Prize and has devoted a large part of his life to promote the convergence of science and religion. Prof William Phillips pioneered laser cooling of atoms and paved the way for scientists to create Bose-Einstein condensation and the atomic clocks, without which Global Positioning System (GPS) would not be possible.

Charles Townes has this to say about God: “God is very personal. He has very personal interactions with us. I think there is continuous interaction between God and this universe, especially with us personally. That is very important to our lives… I believe that and I feel it.”

Prof. William Phillips shares similar sentiments – “I think God wants from us is to have a personal relationship with Him and to have good personal relationships with each other. That is why we are here. The relationship God wants us to have with him is a kind of model… It models for us the kinds of relationships we ought to have with each other.

When I read these words, I was more than inspired. There are so many incredible insights by these two scientific giants in this remarkable book. If only the so-called experts in religion have the humility and understanding of God as shown by the Nobel Laureates, the world would be more peaceful and harmonious. Champions of various faiths, instead of cultivating empathy and understanding, have been sowing discords and hate. It behoves these extremists to read this book so that they may be true to God.

I have read this book three times and I cannot wait for another moment of free time to read it once more. It has given me a new perspective as to how we should conduct ourselves in relation to God and to our neighbours. Get this book now. 1. Federick J. Sheehan

Panderer To Power

(FF: In 2007/2008, the Global Financial Tsunami almost collapsed the global financial system. We have yet to recover from that turmoil. The 2nd wave of financial destruction is about to begin. While many writers have pin-pointed the key global banks as the culprits, headed by Goldman Sachs, few have dared identify specific individuals responsible for the financial fiasco. Mr. Sheehan’s immaculate research have established an iron-clad case that Alan Greenspan was one of the key players that nurtured and promoted the various scams that have destroyed the livelihood of millions across the globe.

The mass media promoted Alan Greenspan as a financial genius, but this remarkable book tells a different story. In simple language, Alan Greenspan has been exposed as a scam artist, manipulator, charlatan and as the title of the book suggest, a panderer to power. Bernanke is following Alan Greenspan’s footsteps and we hope that Mr Sheehan will also expose this latter day panderer to power. This is a must read, and will be a classic.

Please read also Greenspan Bubbles which the above author co-wrote with William A. Fleckenstein which was reviewed in 2008. See archives.

Defy The Stars

(FF: Having just got back from Gaza and experienced first hand the devastation and cruelty suffered by the Palestinians at the hands of Israel’s war criminals, reading the story of a 21-year old student shot in the head by an Israeli sniper while trying to help a Palestinian child and died nine months later, aroused extreme anger in me. Tom Hurndall was unarmed, yet he was gunned down mercilessly.

The war criminals denied the crime, but the persistent efforts for justice by Tom’s Mother, the author, ensured that Tom did not die in vain. Finally, Israel admitted its culpability. This is a story of the courage of a young man making the ultimate sacrifice, a family’s determination to see that justice is done and the brutality of the Israeli regime. A story told with dignity and compassion. It is also a story about the Palestinians in Gaza, of all the mothers who have lost their sons in sixty years of occupation. Be prepared to stay up all night when you pick up this book.

"One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty. I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law."

Conspiracy Theory or Reality?

"Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it."

Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek’s Poison Chalice To Ong Ka Ting! - By Matthias Chang (22/3/10) PDF Print E-mail
By Matthias Chang
Sunday, 21 March 2010 09:33

What a comedy – Ah Lek’s proposal to Ka Ting to vie for the Presidency of the MCA (the Chinese component party of the Barisan Nasional).

If there ever was a poison chalice given to an opponent, this must be it!

I surmise that, if Ka Ting were to put on his thinking cap as a former political secretary he would refuse the suggestion outright and if he behaves as a former minister, the lust for power would seduce him and he would fall for the bait, hook, line and sinker!

I have held back my commentary till today because I wanted to see whether Ka Ting would realize the trap that he had walked into. He may have second thoughts, because the mainstream mass media have reported that Ka Ting has indicated that his candidacy would not be as easy as assured by Ah Lek and his band of has-beens and indicated that he might want to have a “jaw, jaw” with Ong Tee Keat, the incumbent president, to work out an exit strategy.

There is the much quoted cliché that in politics there are no permanent friends or enemies. It follows that political relationships are grounded on opportunism and the advancement of self-interest.

Every Chinese in Malaysia knows that Ah Lek hates the guts of Ka Ting way back during the infamous “MCA crisis between Team A and Team B” as Ka Ting was the master strategist behind the then President of MCA, Tun Ling Leong Sik.

Ah Lek’s antagonism towards Leong Sik was supposedly because his protégé Chan Kong Choy was sidelined, so that Ka Ting would succeed Leong Sik. But all along, Ah Lek’s hidden agenda was to be the President for one term at the minimum.

However, the drama turned out differently, Leong Sik and Ah Lek were rejected by the Chinese community and Ka Ting and Kong Choy teamed up and took over the party!

So, is the suggestion from Ah Lek that Ka Ting is sorely needed to save the party a genuine attempt to resolve the crisis or is there a hidden agenda?

Consider the following:

1.    The Ministry of Transport is the coveted ministry of the MCA and the President gets this turf.

2.    Ka Ting on assuming the Presidency declined this coveted prize and handed it over to his “team-mate” Kong Choy. Why?

3.    The Port Klang financial fiasco was already brewing and came to the boil under Kong Choy’s watch when key officials misled the Board and the scandal is now a matter of criminal investigations.

4.    Tee Keat, an old “ally” of Ah Lek and Kong Choy in Team B during the previous MCA crisis, unwittingly agreed to take over the portfolio when he became the President. He walked into a minefield of vested interests. His political secretary should have known better.

And as they say, the rest is history.

In the unlikely event that Ka Ting succeeds in wresting the Presidency from Tee Keat, would he (as a condition for the support of the has-beens) become the Minister of the Transport Ministry?

I would advise Ka Ting to put on his thinking cap as a former political secretary rather than a former minister. He knows as well as I do, a political secretary often sees political storms quite differently from a minister. It is the duty of the political secretary to remove all potential minefields in the path of his political master. This is why a good political secretary is a tremendous asset to his political master, on this issue alone!

Who is going to remove this minefield laid by your implacable enemy, Ah Lek?

You have already stepped into the minefield. There is only one way out – retreat carefully and gently, just as you have resigned gracefully after MCA was trashed mercilessly in the 2008 General Elections. And although Pak Lah bore the brunt of the blame for the dismal and disgraceful performance of the Barisan Nasional, you must admit that you were responsible in part for the fall out with the electorate, the perception of the Ong Ka Ting – Ong Ka Chuan dynasty!

You won the respect of many for the selfless act of relinquishing the presidency, the only leader in the Barisan Nasional to do so. So why do you want to muddy your reputation?

But unfortunately for you, Ah Lek misread the import of my previous article, Barisan Nasional Will Pay A Heavy Price for the MCA Fiasco, and calculated that an opportunity could be exploited to get rid of a former ally whose actions have harmed his protégé, by proposing that you contest for the presidency.

Get out while there is still time. This is the only anti-dote for the poison chalice given by Ah Lek!
